Greetings, and welcome to my section of this web page. I'm delighted you clicked your way here.

I'm an attorney (no longer practicing), a mother (two boys, both in their twenties), an amateur photographer, an avid reader, and with my husband, enjoy a host of outdoor activities and travel. I'm also the author of twelve mystery novels and several short stories and essays.

So why do I write mysteries? I like bringing a sense of justice and order to the world (something often missing in real life). I like wrapping up the loose ends, knowing what happened and why (something else sorely missing in the everyday world). But mostly, I'm fascinated by people's stories. I'm interested in exploring how people interact and why they do what they do. I look upon the mystery as the frame on which to hang the human drama that is the core of virtually all storytelling.

My latest book, The Next Victim, will be available in paperback in June 2008. In it, attorney Kali O'Brien is forced to face some unpleasant truths about herself and her family.

[cover]Kali is out of town when her brother John tries desperately to reach her. Now he's dead of an apparent suicide, and Kali learns he was the lead suspect in the double homicide of a wealthy heiress and a college coed. When the remains of a third woman, a stripper, are found in a ditch, again with ties to her brother, Kali searches for the street tough runaway who may have the answers she needs.

Here's what the critics have said:

"Kali's eighth case explores complex human attachments through a sharply focused plot that unfolds with beautifully controlled momentum."
-Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Jacobs deftly juggles a large cast and a multilayered plot while compassionately depicting Kali's struggle with family issues."
-Publisher's Weekly

Last year's release, The Only Suspect, now available as a paperback, is a book about the ways life can spin out of control. Dr. Sam Russell's trial for the murder of his first wife ended in a hung jury. Now his second wife is missing and Sam has no memory of the night she disappeared. Detective Hannah Montgomery knows the husband is always suspect, but as she investigates, she discovers that Sam's wife has secrets of her own.

Feel free to read excerpts, sit in on interviews, read my bio, check out the booklist, take a look at some of the recipes my characters make—and most of all, write me. I'd love to hear from you.

Your cyber-friend in mystery,

Jonnie
