Lora Roberts

Lora RobertsThe other day the UPS man came to my door, as he's been doing any time these past 20 years. He asked me, "Are you still writing mysteries?" And I told him I was. I said, "Isn't it amazing that after all this time we're still doing what we're doing?" Okay, it was incoherent, but he knew what I meant. I gave him a card for my new book, and was glad that my job of the past 20 years didn't involve endlessly getting in and out of a big truck.

You probably guessed that little story was just a sneaky way to introduce the topic of my new book. It has a long title: The Affair of the Incognito Tenant, a Mystery with Sherlock Holmes, and takes place in England 100 years ago.

That's right, not a sniff of Palo Alto in the whole book.

Here's a brief summary, to introduce you to this total departure in my writing life:

In 1903, widowed Charlotte Dodson's livelihood is threatened by sinister events that converge on the little Sussex village where she is housekeeper at a small manor.

The villagers whisper that a vampire is on the loose. A man famed for evil has escaped from Dartmoor prison, and is drawn to the area. The legendary Orb of Kezir is sought by someone who wants the fabulous jewel at all costs.

And the mysterious Mr. Sigerson is somehow linked to these events.

Charlotte finds herself at the center of a black conspiracy, with that which she holds most dear endangered, and the man she comes to know as Sherlock Holmes is the only one who can help her.

Readers say:

"...The time and place and a number of very interesting characters are beautifully caught by the author, and soon a mysterious death (and other curious incidents) move the story along nicely. Well done, Lora Roberts!"
-Al Hubin

"What is so wonderful about the author and the book is that my interest quickly became total immersion in a story that features a strong female who could easily rival Sherlock's powers of deduction, and yet, she maintains all the fabulous characteristics that make her a true-to-life female, not just a stereotype. The story line has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and enough suspense to keep you engaged. The characters are all quite believable and it is easy to fit yourself into their life and times. Very good book and one I recommend."
-Murder and Mayhem Bookclub

So that's what I've been up to for the last little while. I've put a few paragraphs about the inspiration for The Affair of the Incognito Tenant in with my other ramblings on various topics. Please browse around. Help yourself to any snacks you might find. And don't forget—all my Liz Sullivan books are available as e-books from Belgrave House.
